Preserving a Legacy, One Click at a Time: The Fordice History Project

Case study · Non-profit

Fordice History Project: a home for Mississippi's stories.

I designed and manage the Squarespace website for the Fordice History Project, an effort to collect the oral history of Governor Kirk Fordice and First Lady Pat Fordice, so people can learn about the project, share a story or photo, and support it.

The challenge

The stories are out there. The site has to collect them.

The project's goal is to capture first-hand memories of Mississippi's first Republican governor since Reconstruction, from supporters and critics alike, before those stories are lost.

That meant the website couldn't just inform. It had to earn trust, explain how the project works and make it easy for anyone to contribute an interview, a memory or a photo.

The plan

Three ways the site invites people in.

Generic → Personal

Lead with the legacy

The official portrait, a clear mission and Learn More and Donate buttons up front, with the red, white and navy of the project's brand.

Passive → Participate

Make sharing simple

Share Your Story, an Oral History Sign-Up and a Photo Upload form, so contributing takes a few minutes instead of a phone tag.

Questions → Answers

Answer questions up front

A FAQ on governance, funding and where the histories will live, plus the History Is Lunch program video from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

The website

Take a look around.

Desktop and mobile screens from the live site at fordicehistoryproject.com.

What launched

An archive that keeps growing.

3ways to contribute: share a story, sign up for an oral history interview or upload a photo
8common questions answered in the FAQ, from governance to where the histories will live
1clear place to learn, take part and donate
Your turn

Have a story your website should be telling?

I'll review your current site for free and send you the top 3 fixes, in plain English. No sales pitch.
